Continued Painting Plus a Gift

I am still working on my homework from my Color class with Gail Harker. I finished the small notebook of color schemes and painted more scales.

This is the small color notebook which is 6″x 6″.

The color schemes are based on a book by Johannes Itten.

There are dyads, triads, tetrads and hexads and I have painted pages for all the different possibilities. Some I painted twice because the first effort wasn’t good.

I really enjoyed painting these as it is always interesting to see how the pages turn out. Once you get up to 4 and 6 colors it is difficult getting all the colors on such a small page without it turning to mud.

Here are the various scales that I painted today drying. Most of these are tints to shades (adding white and black). I still need to do more of the mixing complementary color scales. I have most of the homework completed but I still have to organize the other notebook. It was a great class and she does offer it online if you can’t make it to La Conner, Washington. When I finished painting, my husband brought me a “gift”.

He found this outside. It’s bark with lichen. He said “I figured you’d like this better than a dozen roses.”

Does he know me or what??

More Color

I have been being a tourist this week as we had company. We took a long ride through Glacier National Park and went to Many Glaciers. I had never been on that side of the park and it is really beautiful.

This is a view from the back deck of the lodge there. While we were on the deck, we saw a grizzly bear up on the mountain side. It was a long ways away so I didn’t take a photo but you could see the bear really well through binoculars.

I mainly take photos that look like the one above when I’m in the park. I am always looking at bark, lichens and rock.

There were some interesting dead trees too. 🙂

I finally got all my paints that I had ordered so I finished my color wheels today. I was waiting on primary cyan and primary magenta for this three primary wheel.

I also painted a six primary wheel today too.

Earlier this week, I did a bit of dyeing. My sister wanted to have one of her blouses over dyed. I forgot to take a photo but it turned out well. I had three white shirts that I never seem to wear so I thought I would ice dye them. Because I did the dyeing in a jar, the dye didn’t get all the way through the shirts. I do kind of like how they turned out. I might over dye them but I think I will wait on that right now.

This is my favorite one. It was dyed with black and yellow.

This one is really bright. But I guess I can wear it for Saint Patrick’s Day!

Feeding the Birds

I worked most of the day today on more color homework. I painted rectangular tetrad and hexad color schemes. I also sanded some more boards for the yurt walls. The sanding is taking a really long time. I will be posting a yurt update on the Felting and Fiber Studio site on Monday. But I thought you might like to see what was eating the bird seed I put out in front of our house. I put a cup of sunflower seeds into the feeder in the front flower bed. I had noticed that the seeds were disappearing quickly and I mean gone. There was nothing left in the feeder and usually there are shells scattered all over it when the birds eat it. I didn’t think much about it and kept filling it up. Then the other day, I found this intruder eating the seeds. She posed nicely for photos.

The seeds are all gone now 🙂

Color Homework

I have been really busy. So even though I haven’t posted, I have still been working away at my color homework, finishing up my umbrella tree and carpentry work for the yurt. I thought I’d show you a bit of what I have been doing for my color homework.

The class I took was Level Color Studies from Gail Harker Creative Studies Center. I highly recommend it. You can take it online or at the center.

I’ve been making charts of all my different colored pencils.

Finding color in magazines.

Painting color schemes.

I think I am going to use this painted piece for the cover. I have really been enjoying playing with color. I will be posting about my umbrella tree on the Felting and Fiber Studio tomorrow. I hope you’ll stop by and check it out.

A Bit of Color for the Fourth

Happy Fourth of July to all of you American readers! Hope you’re having a great holiday. I thought I’d show you a few of the color pages that I painted in class last week. We learned all about mixing paint colors and making color wheels. I had a great time and learned so much.

And I had a great time finding the different colors that I had painted in nature. Such fun! I ordered a bunch new colors of Golden fluid acrylics when I got home so more colors to come.
