Low Value Saturated Color Collage

I am continuing to work on my homework for Level 3 Art and Design. Today I worked on another collage from painted pages that I made while in class. These are the low value saturated colors. I showed you the collage with the low value chromatic grays before.

Here it is in my notebook. The colors that I used were Cobalt Turquoise, Ultramarine Blue and Phthalo Blue Green Shade combined with grays of the same value.

And here is the collage I made today with the pure colors. We are only supposed to use lines, squares and rectangles in these collages and the colors are limited. It is hard to make them look interesting. Next I have to do a collage with the saturated colors and the chromatic grays in one piece, both in the high value and the low value. That will at least give me more to work with in regards to different colors.

Big Ski Chair Affair

We have been working on our chair over the last several weeks. Today we met to finish the primer coat of paint and to work out a schedule on what’s to be done next.

Here’s the chair with its primer coat. We have ordered foam for the cushions but it hasn’t arrived yet. We are still have to paint the chair, make cushions with eco printed felt, make more leaves and then attach the leaves. We are also going to make a felt rock to go under the bench which hasn’t been started yet. So still quite a bit to do yet.

But look how wonderful the eco printed felt looks on the bench! Plus Paula made some great pillows. And if you look at the right side of the photo, Louise is holding up some leaves that will be meandering up that side with various vines wrapped around the chair. So we’re well on our way. It’s an interesting process figuring out how we’re going to deal with different issues that arise on the structure of the chair. We’re having fun!

Water, Water, Everywhere

I had company all week long and we were busy skiing and having fun. We skied 30,000 vertical feet on Friday. But I did have a bit of time to work on my homework for Level 3 Art & Design. I’m not sure I followed the directions very well as I was supposed to find the “line” in water. I just ended up drawing water.

It’s a little hard to scan these in as they are pencil drawings. Hopefully, you can see the drawings. You can click on them to enlarge if you’d like. So I started with pencil line drawings.

Then I added in more value changes to the same drawings. I made a bit of an error on the last row as I didn’t put them in the same order. Oops.

I’m still working on this page where I am adding color to the water.

And then I decided to try to stick with more line and less filling in of the entire little block of space. These look so cartoonish to me that I have a hard time with that style. Have you ever tried to draw water?

 

Big Ski Chair Affair

We started working on our ski lift chair for The Big Ski Chair Affair. We have a lovely studio space to use thanks to the Glacier Restaurant Group. Four of the chairs are in the bottom part of their building where we can work on them.

We cleaned the chair and then stripped all the old foam that was pretty worn out and dirty off the chair. You can see two other chairs behind ours. The middle bar in the chair is going to be removed all together so we didn’t take the black foam off of that one. Didn’t have the correct wrench to remove the bar today.

The next step is to start painting it and then we will get more foam and start the upholstery process. We’re still working on making more leaves for it and I keep stitching away each morning to make one leaf.

These had veins of stitching added to them but I forgot to take a photo of them after that. I will keep you updated on our progress.

Missing in Action

I am back home after two weeks of traveling. First we went to Philadelphia for a wholesale buying show for the store. Bought lots of good stuff and the weather in Philly was fantastic. One day it was sunny and 70 degrees, in February. Usually it is cold and dreary when we go. We went down to South Street and saw the mosaics there. Just google South Street Mosaics Philadelphia and you can take a look. I got photos but they are all on my phone and not on the computer. Sorry.

Then we came back home and two days later we drove to LaConner, Washington for the first session of Level 3 Art & Design with Gail Harker. I was really happy to start this class and had a great time. We have 5 people in the class and worked on color, chromatic grays and line. I have lots of homework so I’ll be showing that here. Hopefully, you won’t get too bored.

So I made another collage today with the low value chromatic gray papers that I had painted in class. I have several more of these to do. We are to use squares, stripes and rectangles in these collages. Each collage is 6″ x 6″.

I painted more paper today for future collages. Here’s my rainbow of colors.

Tints to Shades Primary Magenta

And this is tints and shades painted with primary magenta. Again, sorry the photos aren’t good. Each of these painted pages is 9′ x 9″. I need lots of painted papers for future work in the class. So we are supposed to develop a stash of painted paper. Lots more to do!
