Jack and the Dyed Wool

Here’s Jack… I finally finished him and made him a walking staff. He wasn’t very well balanced without it. He originally was made to sit down but then he kept wanting to stand up so I had to make some adjustments on his finished appearance.
Here’s a better view of his face. Kay does such a wonderful job teaching how to make faces. Skip the next photo if you don’t want to see any wool genitalia.

I always seem to have to make my figures anatomically correct. And then they never want to wear any clothing. Strange.
Here’s the mixed breed wool I dyed for making more cat toys. I am running low and summer season is upon us. I’ll have to be diligent and get these made!
Here’s a closer look. The colors turned out well except the purple isn’t the best. I did really like the limey green one though. I’m sure the kitties will be very happy with their new toys!
This is Falkland wool that I am planning on using to make myself a vest. I hope I dyed enough but I guess I’ll just have to make do.

Rainy Spring

It has been really rainy here throughout May and June. It finally stopped raining today so I took some photos. Everything is so green. I love watching the hummingbirds at the feeder.
I don’t get the best photos but it’s fun trying.
There were at least 6 hummers that kept coming in to feed. I have to fill up the feeder nearly every day.
The iris are loving the rain.
I cut a bunch to bring in the house because they got so wet and heavy they bent over and nearly broke their stems. But I still have plenty to view out the kitchen window. I dyed more wool today but don’t have any photos yet as it isn’t finished. It’s cooling now. Needed more wool for cat toys to sell this summer and I dyed some Falkland wool to hopefully make myself a vest.

Abstract Felt and Mini Nuno Felt

I completed this piece several weeks ago but don’t think I blogged about it. It’s wet felted and hand stitched. Not my usual colors and I’m not sure I like it all that much. It seems a bit busy to me.

Here’s a close up. I used mainly stem stitch, couching and French knots.

I’ve been wanting to nuno felt a sleeveless top for myself for sometime now but I never managed to get it done. So today, I tried out a sample with the Falkland wool that I ordered. I needed to get a shrinkage percentage and this piece shrunk about 20%. I used a small piece of organza as the base as I didn’t want to use up my silk.

And here it is on the model!! So I’ve made a piece of seamless nuno felted clothing. Not very big but it worked. Now I have to find something big enough for a resist so that it will fit me. I will also alter the pattern just a bit. This one I essentially used a square with holes for the arms and neck. But I’m excited to try, next up, full size seamless nuno felted garment.

I did finish my Traveling Page for June based on the seashore but can’t show photos yet. Next theme due in July is castles. As there are few castles in Montana, I’m having a bit of a problem coming up with inspiration for this one. I’m thinking about basing it on gargoyles but wasn’t sure if gargoyles were used more on cathedrals as opposed to castles. Anyone know?

Page to India

Here is the page that I made for Maya for May. Her theme is leaves. And since my favorite leaves are in autumn, that’s what I chose to depict. I used a photo that we had taken in British Columbia several years ago when we were on vacation. I painted with Jacquard fabric paints, and then did a bit of thread sketching and then quilted the whole piece.

Here’s a close up.

Here’s the back. I used a quote by Albert Camus. “Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower.” I am now working on my page for June with the theme of “seashore”. I haven’t gotten very far but hopefully, will get it done in the next couple of weeks.

Over Dyed Scarves

These are the scarves that I overdyed. They were a bit namby pamby before and I like them better now. The colors in the photos are a bit off, these are even a deeper color than shown.

Here’s a green one. I’m thinking about doing a bit of discharging on this one to make it a bit more interesting.

This one was pink and yellow and now is a deep salmon with orange and spots of a deep plum.

This one was originally done with spectral bleeding tissue at a class I took, I then shibori dyed it with maroon but it needed a color to bring it all together. So I overdyed it with Aztec gold. It looks much more wearable now.

This one was pink and black – now a deep cranberry although it still looks pink in this photo.

This one was much more yellow before I overdyed it. I don’t think very many people wear yellow so I think green will sell better.

This last one is shawl sized and it was Aztec gold, yellow and brown before. I added red and turquoise. It’s a very deep, rich mix of colors now. Much more interesting to me. As you can probably tell, if you’ve read my blog before, I like deep, rich colors and I’m not a real fan of pastels. So I’m much happier with these.
