Trip to Glacier National Park

We went to Glacier National Park this past weekend. It’s about a 45 minute drive from our house and I wanted to check out the wild flowers.

Several years ago I found this patch of Mountain Lady Slippers. These are a wild orchid and this is the biggest patch of them I have ever found. They are right by MacDonald Lake Lodge but I bet the majority of people walking by never even see them.

I found a few more flowers and then I went looking for trillium. They are usually on the path at Avalanche Creek but the problem is that there is a wooden walkway and you aren’t supposed to go off the trail. So I have a really hard time getting a good photo.

Here’s the best photo I could get and it’s a little blurry. But I did get to see them. I don’t have any trillium around my house.

I also took the obligatory bark photos. I must have thousands of these by now.

Here’s the “famous” Avalanche Creek photo. So much water rushing through at this time of year.

And here are Symphony and Dennis on the board walk. It was a great day!

Wild Clematis

I am seeing lots of wild clematis on my morning walks. I took a bunch of photos and decided to do a watercolor sketch in my sketchbook.

The leaves don’t really look like this in the wild, mainly you just see the flowers and vines. But it needed some leaves so I just added them in from a different photo.

Another item of note, we finished our ski chair this afternoon. I will be posting about it soon over on the Felting and Fiber Studio so you can see the finished chair and hopefully see it in its location for the summer before the auction. Have a great weekend!

Mariposa Lily

I had planned on posting quite a few photos of Montana wildflowers but my internet connection isn’t working well. But I managed to upload 2 photos. My sister has been visiting and she wanted to find as many different Montana wildflowers and take photos of them. So we have been searching all week for different wildflowers. I haven’t created much this week but I did manage one sketch.

This is a Mariposa Lily. They are scattered throughout the woods and I actually see many of these each morning when I walk the dogs.

Mariposa Lily Sketch

I hadn’t really looked at these flowers closely before and it was fun to do a sketch and then add some water color pencils. I always see things in much more detail when I’m sketching and it’s nice to slow down and look closely. Have a great weekend!
