Greeting Card

When I am planning on free motion machine stitching on a piece, I like to practice a little bit first. Usually I practice on a small piece of felt or even plain interfacing. So when I was working on my tamarack piece, I needed to practice the leaves.

Here is the finished piece with the leaves in the upper right hand corner. I was going for a more abstract approach and decided to try some zig zag stitch for the leaves and “straight” free motion stitch for the branches. I practiced with different thread colors on a piece of nuno felt.

Here’s the finished greeting card that I created from the small scrap of FME practice. I added a piece of painted paper behind it and stitched it down with zigzag around the edge. I love to make cards from whatever is laying around in the studio.

Felt Applique Completed

I finished couching down the yarn on to the felt applique piece I have been working on.

Here’s the completed piece wrapped around matte board. I didn’t lace it on yet, just taped it on the back so I could see how I liked it. I think it would look better with a border but I will have to find the right piece of fabric for it.

Here area couple of close ups of the couched down yarn. I haven’t come up with any name for this piece yet. Any suggestions?

 

Making Slow Progress

I have still been stitching away on the felt applique hand stitch project.

Here is where I was last week.

Now I have appliqued down all the felt pieces and all I have left is to couch down the dark maroon yarn. I am going to use a thin thread in the same color to do this as I don’t think I need to add much more “detail” in the thicker, brighter color threads. I don’t want it to feel too chaotic.

Here’s a close up. I used a variety of stitches to applique down the smaller felt centers of flowers. Once I finish the couching, I will need to decide how I am going to finish this. The felt background is pretty soft so I think I need to stretch it around a board or canvas. I do think a nice border might be nice but I’m not sure how I would stitch that on without it ending up really irregular and wavy.

Holiday Cards for Elizabeth

Each year on the Felting and Fiber Studio Forum we have a holiday card exchange. This year, Elizabeth and I are partners to swap cards. I made several cards and decided to send her two since I couldn’t decide which was the best one. I used the felt that I made for the 4th quarter challenge and a piece of felt that was screen printed and then over dyed. The over dyeing was a bit dark so you can barely see any screen printing at this point. But it makes a nice background. I then appliqued the cut pieces of machine thread felt down to the background.

I added a star and a trunk and some beads for ornaments.

And then I made a really wonky tree with a Angelina star and bead garland. I forgot to take photos before I sent these away but luckily Elizabeth took photos for me. I stitched the background felt to a paper note card on the machine. The felt does tend to stretch a bit so I should have added stabilizer to keep it from stretching but I guess a bit more wonkiness never hurt anyone! Have a good weekend.
