I have been adding layers of paint to this canvas for several weeks now. Now I am working on the design based on Glacier Lily shapes.
Glacier lilies are yellow but I just wanted to use the shapes that I had sketched out over the last few weeks. Some of the shapes are flowers that had just bloomed and others are based on flowers past their prime and wilting. They make really interesting shapes then.
Here you can see how I have some cut out of freezer paper that I will be using as a resist and to the right are some of the different shapes I am using on tracing paper. I did them in different sizes to get a variety of scale. Once I get them all cut out, I need to decide if I have enough flowers. I will be adding layers of green paint over the flower shaped resists and then adding leaves and more stems. Then I will add another layer of paint. So I have a long ways to go yet on this one.
Today we’re going to a Native American Pow Wow. I have lived here for 20 years and never been to one so I thought it would be great to experience. I hope to show you some photos of the bead work and costumes next time.
I had never heard of Glacier lilies. The cut outs look cool. I look forward to seeing the finished project. I’ve been to many Pow Wows. It will be fun, but beware of pointing and don’t pick up any feathers. Both signs of disrespect. Its a great culture I’m sure you’ll find a lot of inspiration.
Thanks Marilyn, nobody paid much attention to us. We just watched and took photos. So we didn’t cause any problems.
👍
The Pow-Wow sounds interesting (I didn’t know about the pointing and feathers – it would be easy to make a faux-pas wouldn’t it?). I wonder if you will be allowed to take photos?
Your glacier lilies project is coming along nicely
Thanks Lyn! We took lots of photos and didn’t do anything to embarrass ourselves. I will post some soon.
Loving the colours of your canvas and excited to see how the lilies will interact with it. The Pow Wow sounds intriguing, I confess I don’t know a great deal about native American culture so looking forward to reading about that too 🙂
Thanks Terri! I keep changing my mind as I go along so who knows what the end result will be. The pow wow was a little disappointing but I will show some photos.
The coloured layers you’ve painted so far are lovely – the green will go well with that. Sorry to hear the pow wow was a bit disappointing, but hope you managed to get some photos of the beadwork.
Thanks Kim! I got a few photos but no close ups of bead work. Many of the costumes now are commercially made and not hand made. We saw a few women with older costumes that their mothers made but overall, the bead work was lacking.
What a shame – guess that’s the way the world is going. 😦
