Green Fiber Transformed

Or perhaps I should say permutated? My friend Deb told me that she was impressed with my “50 cent” word “Permutations” but that it sounded just like me. Thanks Deb! Anywho, I have been turning the dyed fibers into batts. This is one of my favorite parts. I love those nice fluffy batts when they come right off the carder. These have merino wool, silk noil, banana fiber, Tencel, flax, cashmere and angora fibers.

Green Batts

I added in some reds and pinks to liven up the greens a bit. I can’t wait to see how these look when they are felted.

Batt Close up

The close up photos just didn’t turn out well. I need to work out this macro business on my camera.

Dyed Fibers

I spent most of the day today dyeing a variety of fibers green plus a piece of silk. I’m planning a new project which includes nuno felting.

Here’s some locks in the dye pot.

And here they are drying out.

I was trying for a variety of greens.

This is a portion of the silk I dyed. It is 3 yards of 5mm silk.

It is also mottled green. As usual my fingers are a bit green as well 🙂

Go Fly a Kite

Today was our local fiber group meeting. We made kites and then went out and flew them. I have never made a kite before and I can’t remember the last time I flew one. It was really simple to make the kite and we had a lot of fun flying them.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Wally, Bunny’s husband, helped us with the kites. He already had a pattern made and we used plastic garbage bags to make the kite. We just traced around the pattern and then cut out the kite.

Here’s Wally and I.

I’m tracing out a pattern.

Here’s Carole and Wally getting the next bag ready to trace and cut.

I’m not sure what Louise was saying at this point but,

Then we taped sticks to the kite.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERACut some kite string.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Reinforced the edges with tape, burned a hole through the plastic and tied the two edges with string.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

We added tails with ribbon and attached the long strings to fly the kites.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAAnd off we went to the park to fly them.

Here’s Bunny flying her kite.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

We decided to try a different location since there wasn’t quite enough wind.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

It was starting to get cold but the wind was good.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Everyone got into the act!

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

It was amazing how well the kites flew.

We had a great time. So my suggestion for you is go fly a kite.

Surprise Fiber Goodies from Karen

Look what came in the mail yesterday. Wonderful fiber goodies from Karen. What a surprise. She sent mulberry silk, merino, merino and silk blend, optim, hemp fiber, sari silk ribbons and organza yarn. The last four items on the list I haven’t experimented with yet. So fun times ahead!!

I look at this photo and just want to jump in and wallow around in the fibery goodness. Thank you so much Karen, you made my day!

Thank You’s

I received this lovely felted index card holder from Zed before Christmas. Isn’t it gorgeous? She used a variety of fibers and parts of it have a wonderful sheen.

This is the back side and the colors are so yummy.

She has used blanket stitch around all the edges. I am using it for keeping all my notes from my hand and stitch course. Perhaps I’ll be able to stay more organized now. Thanks Zed, I love it!

Then I got two skeins of merino yarn from Nanci, my co-worker. The yarn is absolutely gorgeous.

She put on the container, future rock, trees, bark and leaves. She knows what I like! Thanks Nanci!

I got another fiber related gift but I didn’t get a photo of it yet, it just arrived last night. So that will have to wait until a later post. Happy New Year!
